Kevin Chong went to Hough's SUCCESS assembly to give out awards to students. Instead, he found himself on the stage with the students giving him an award-the Hough Hawk Hall of Fame Award. Chong has donated countless hours at the school, helping students in the media center, working in classrooms, and programming computers. Lately, his real passion is speaking to groups of students about disabilities and overcoming obstacles. Chong walks with a gait. His left hand and arm do not work, and he shakes when he tries to write. He has had cerebral palsy since birth. "My life has always been a challenge, just like everyone else's," he told students. " You all have challenges, like learning math, learning reading." He asked everyone in the audience, children and adults, to challenge themselves every day with one thing. His speech was slightly slurred, but his message was loud and clear: "Challenge yourself to be the best at what you do."

A former Vancouver student and Columbia River graduate, Chong wants to give something back to the schools and the children in Clark County. He has volunteered since 1992, first at Peter S. Ogden Elementary School. He has spoken to classes at Chinook, Sarah J. Anderson, and Lincoln elementary schools, and addressed nearly 40 groups this year. "I really enjoy speaking about disabilities and overcoming obstacles. I teach them how to respect people with differences," he said.

Well into his presentation he stops and asks students, "If you had one wish and you were me, what would you wish for?" Some students answer the obvious- not to have cerebral palsy. But students also give answers like this: "the world would learn to respect people." "Then I know I've done my job," he said. ... Notes from students, teachers, and even parents indicate he is positively impacting many students' lives.

The support of family and friends has allowed Chong to pursue this dream while working part time on his family's farm and in real estate. "I have learned that if you have a passion to do something, you should do it, and it will give you good fortune," he said.

Years ago, Chong sat down and wrote the phrase: "I have no boundaries." He lives that message, and the students he works with believe it's true for them too.
